He retired in 1883 but continued as Pastor Emeritus until his death. He also helped organize eleven churches in central Mississippi including the West Union Presbyterian Church on April 11, 1886. He preached there once a month. Dr. Alexander was also an educator and teacher. He served as the superintendant of Attala County schools from 1882 to 1885.
