Nathaniel Bradstreet Shurtleff, Jr., was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on March 16, 1838, and graduated at Harvard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1859. He helped organize the Twelfth Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in April 1861 and was elected as Captain of Company D on April 25, 1861. He was commissioned and mustered into federal service in that rank and command on June 26, 1861. He was killed in action on August 9, 1862, at Cedar Mountain, Virginia, at age 24, and was buried with full military honors at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Massachusetts, on August 16, 1862.
