Sioux Falls-Raymond E Gilberton passed on peacefully Friday Nov. 26, 2004 at Sioux Valley Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday Nov. 29, at George Boom Funeral Home, with interment at a later date at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis. Mr. Gilbertson, son of Martin and Sadie (Martin) Gilbertson, was born Dec. 14, 1929 in Glenwood, MN. The family lived in Igloo, SD before moving to Lead, SD, where Ray worked at Homestake Gold Mine. He spent time in California with his father before enlisting in the US Air Force in 1951. The Air Force took him many places, Okinawa being the first. Upon returning stateside to Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, he met and courted Lucy Westendorf during weekend leaves to Sioux Falls. The couple was united in marriage on Nov. 26, 1955 in Luverne, MN, and lived in Omaha. The family travels took them to Guam, Montana, England, Louisiana and Greece.

Ray retired from the Air Force with an honorable discharge in 1971, and settled in Rapid City where he worked as a computer operator at 1st National Bank of the Black Hills. After moving to Sioux Falls, he worked in the computer department of the Sioux Falls School District for 20 years. Following retirement in 1995, Ray enjoyed fishing, doing yard work, recycling and spending time with his family. He was so proud of his children and loved his grandchildren dearly.
