His middle name has been a mystery, his mother's maiden name was Gifford, but he always said it was George, in the Iowa Birth Records it shows the above name as listed.
His parents were very poor and lost their farm near Wessington SD and so they placed him with another farmer in the area when he was about 16 to work and make money.
By 18, he had run away from the farm work, and was boxing in the circus to earn a living, doing that for several years, when he happened to end up in Glenwood MN where he met Sarah Martin, who was divorced from her first husband.
He worked and traveled with several construction crews around South Dakota, including working on the airport runway at Sioux Falls, SD, but in 1965 obtained employment at Ellsworth AFB and moved to a permanent home at 222 Doolittle Street in Rapid City SD, where they remained until his death. © RoxAnna Foudray 2014

Related.... His middle initial is incorrect it shows a C. but it is G. for Gifford, but he did not like it, so he always used the middle name George.
