US Senator. Served in the War of 1812 as a US Army paymaster. Served from Vermont in the United States Senate on two different occasions. Elected to the seat, he served from 1839 to 1851. In 1853 he was appointed again to the office to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator William Upham, serving this time from 1853 to 1854.
