REMAINS OF MRS. MERRILL BROUGHT HERE FOR BURIAL
Was A Member of One of Monroe's Most Distinguished Families, Died in Detroit.
The remains of Mrs. Laura Noble Merritt, who died in St. Luke's hospital in Detroit, were brought to Monroe today for burial in Woodland cemetery. Mrs. Merrill's death closely follows that of her husband which occurred in Detroit Saturday morning and who was brought to Monroe and buried in Woodland cemetery Monday.
Mrs. Merrill was the daughter of David A. Noble, whom the older residents will remember one of Monroe county's leading citizens and congressman to Washington. She was educated in the Boyd seminary and later finished her education in the Emma Willard School in Troy, N.Y. With her mother, she pent a year in Washington society, where she was a social favorite and they were leaders in Monroe society during the Civil War. She lived her practically entire life time in this city in the old Noble homestead on Washington street, now the White residence. The grounds surrounding the homestead which comprise the entire block, were noted for their beauty and profusion of flowers. There were seventeen brick walks laid out in the gardens. Her friends in this city number the old , and distinguished families. Mrs. Elizbeth Bacon Custer was a personal friend, which friendship has continued throughout the years. General Custer was often a guest at the Noble home. (MEN, Thursday, August 15, 1918)js
