Charles Winston Brooke died peacefully at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House on October 20, 2007 after a prolonged illness.
Charlie was born in 1943 to James O. and Betty Brooke in Savannah, Georgia, and moved to Davenport in 1947. He graduated from Central High School in 1961 where he was all-state in football and president of the student council. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1965 where he was Phi Beta Kappa and a member of the 1963 Rose Bowl team. He attended the University of Iowa Law School where he was on Law Review and graduated with Distinction in 1968.
Charlie returned to Davenport, where he practiced law until retiring in 2005. He was a member of the Scott County, Iowa and American Bar Associations. He was licensed to practice in Iowa and Illinois, and was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. He was a member of the Iowa Trial Lawyers Association and a frequent speaker at their seminars. He served his country in the Army National Guard.
Charlie married Karen Horst in 1967; they became the proud parents of two sons. He married Roberta Mabee in 1993 and was a wonderful role model to two stepsons.
Charlie was involved in many community organizations including serving on the Board of Directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters and as President of the Quad City Symphony Orchestra. He was a founding member of the Symphony Trust, Conductor's Circle. He was also a dedicated supporter of Habitat for Humanity. The list of Charlie's involvement in organizations and clubs over the years is too lengthy to detail here, but whether it was serving on boards or asking for funds, he was first in line to volunteer.
Charlie was a community leader, and particularly passionate about making Davenport a better place to live. This passion motivated him to seek public office, first as Mayor from 2002 to 2006 and then as a City Alderman.
Charlie was also committed to being physically active. He started the University of Iowa Rugby Club, was a regular at the Davenport Family YMCA, coached Dad's Club softball for several years, and biked in RAGBRAI and TOMRV on numerous occasions. Charlie and Bert enjoyed many bicycling vacations in the U.S. and Canada.
He is survived by his wife, Bert; sons Collin (Syracuse, NY) and Tom (wife Jen, grandson Patrick, Davenport); step sons Chris Mabee (Santa Cruz, CA), and Ben Mabee (Portland, OR); brothers Duncombe (Davenport) and John (Davenport); sister Rebecca (husband Lynn, Marion, IL); sister-in-law Pat (Manitowoc, WI). He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother Jim.
