Composer, lyricist and record producer.

His first big hit, "When a Woman Loves a Man" with Gordon Jenkins, came in 1934.

Co-produced (with John Hammond) Billie Holiday's early recordings, 1936-1939. Billie credited Bernie in her autobiography, "Lady Sings the Blues", as being instrumental in getting her early recordings released under her own name.

His collaboration with Johnny Mercer "Bob White (Whatcha Gonna Swing Tonight)" became a hit for Bing Crosby in 1937.

Best known for writing the words to Thelonious Monk's Round Midnight with Cootie Williams in 1944.
