MSG Charles Wesley Smith, US Army Retired Charles Wesley Smith ("Chas", "Chuck", "Cholly Wally", "Poppy Smurf", or "Santa"), age 76, passed away peacefully at home on February 25th, 2016. He was born in Lenoxburg, Kentucky (Bracken County) on June 28th, 1939 to Charles and Myrtle Smith. Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife Anna Paich Smith. Children: Daughter Ronda Damon and husband Charlie of St. Louis, MO; son Charles Wesley Smith II and wife Dial of St. Louis, MO; daughter Melody Keen and husband Johnny of Kempner, TX; daughter Tammy Borrero and husband Wilfredo of Rochester, NY; daughter Serina Marquis and husband Ken of Troy, MO; daughter Cindy Parris and husband Barrett of Huntsville, AL; and son Bobby Sanders and wife Joy of Bonifay, FL. Grandchildren: Dan Damon, Erick Damon, Tyson Clyburn, Hannah Clyburn-Warren, Hollie Smith, Dominic Smith, Daniel Smith, Joseph Keen, John Keen, Misty Keen, Jasmin Harvey, Amelia Garcia, Christina Borrero, Wilfredo Borrero Jr, Eduardo Borrero, Ricardo Borrero, Kirstie Lewis, Brendon Lewis, Emily Marquis and Melissa Sanders. Great grandchildren: Blake, Carson, Courtney, Miranda, Travis, Emily, Zoe, Abriella, Ja'mar, Ja'nae, Ja'nessa, Liliana, Nolan, Ariel, Emma, Harper, Gary, Lenny, Henry, Kaleb, Lucas, Aurora, Tristina, Waylan and Cori. Brothers: Bobby Smith, Danny Smith and Mike Robinette; and Sisters: Ruth Powell and Jeanie Nance. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Myrtle Smith, his stepfather Mike Robinett, his first wife Lola Mae Smith, Brother Kenneth Robinett and Sister Charlotte Masuch, and grandson Trevor Marquis. At age 17, Charles enlisted in the U.S. Army (Regular Army) where he served for more than 23 years until his retirement in February of 1980. Charles is a veteran of the Vietnam War and his military awards include the Bronze Star Medal w/1st Oak Leaf Cluster; Air Medal (2nd Award); Army Commendation Medal w/1st Oak Leaf Cluster; Army Good Conduct Medal (6th Award); American Campaign Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal w/1 Silver Service Star and 2 Bronze Service Stars (7 Campaigns); Army Service Ribbon; Republic Of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Medal w/Palm; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; and the Aircraft Crewman Badge. He was also a Master Mason, 33rd Degree Memorial Class and conferred with the 4th through 32nd degrees in the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. After retiring from the army, he taught at Central Texas College until 1984. Charles then started his career in Civil Service as the Aviation End-Item-Coordinator for all Rotary Wing Aircraft. Through his love of genealogy work, he founded the Smith Taylor and Allied Families Association (STAFA). A celebration of life service will be held Thursday (3 March) at 1pm at the Bicentennial Chapel, 376 Goss Road SW, Redstone Arsenal, AL. * The family requests that any donations be made to any military or veterans organization in his honor. * Instead of flowers, the family asks that potted plants be given, due to space requirements, and may be sent to 1011 Buffington Road, Huntsville, Alabama 35808.
