Frank E. Hering was considered to be THE FATHER of MOTHER'S DAY. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and once held the position of national president of the FOE. According to an article in the Douglas Daily Dispatch May 10, 1930, he had been awarded a medal by the American War Mothers bearing the title: "Father of Mother's Day".
Frank had been a faculty member of Notre Dame University. He gave a speech on Feb. 7, 1904, at the English Opera House in South Bend, IN: "urging every Eagle Lodge to set aside one day of the year in which men would remember their mothers and make a point of paying special homage to them".
It is generaly agreed that Miss Anna Jarvis, who originated the custom 23 years ago in honor of her own mother, has also been instrumental in winning national recognition for the day.
