Age 69, died Friday, February 27, 2009, at University Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born on June 23, 1939 in Ann Arbor to the late Norman and Margaret Hartweg.

He graduated from Ann Arbor High School (now Pioneer High School) in 1957. Following two years service in the United States Army he attended the University of Michigan and received a Bachelor of Music Degree from their School of Music in 1965, majoring in Percussion and Composition.

He joined the faculty of the Interlochen Arts Academy, in Interlochen, Michigan, following his graduation from college, where he taught Percussion and Music theory for nine years. During that time he was the drummer in a number of jazz and dance bands that performed through Michigan and Ohio, as well as a licensed charter pilot and flight instructor at Winchester Aviation in Traverse City.

He also developed curriculum and taught classes in Aviation Science, computers, mathematics and basic electricity for nearly ten years to pilots training at Saudia Airlines in Saudi Arabia, a position that also served as a launching pad for travel around the world.

Shortly after returning to the United States in 1994 he joined the registration staff at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital in the Emergency Unit,where he worked until November 2008. He also began a long volunteer career at that time - with the Safe House Center, the Ann Arbor/Downtown Kiwanis Club and the University of Michigan's women's basketball program's Booster Club. Jerry was also a longstanding member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and performed close-up magic shows for audiences around Washtenaw County.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman E. Hartweg, in 1964, and Margaret W. Hartweg in 2004, and by his brother, Norman L. Hartweg in 1994. He is survived by his sister, Joyce Hartweg Mannis, and his brother- in-law Jed Mannis, both of Harvard, Massachusetts; a nephew, Joshua W. Mannis of Los Angeles; a niece, Jennifer L. Wishcamper, her husband Henry Wishcamper and daughter, Nina Wishcamper, all of New York City.
