He was a lifelong resident of Ottawa.
He attended Ottawa High School and later earned his G.E.D.
He served in the U.S. Army in Germany in the early 1960s.
He earned a master plumber's license and worked at various plumbing businesses. He worked at Durbin Plumbing in the 1960s and he retired in 1998 from maintenance work at Osawatomie State Hospital after 11 years.
He married Connie Dempsay in 1965. They divorced. He married Vicki Miller Gretencord in 1977. They divorced.
Survivors include sons, Billy DeWald and Brian DeWald, both of Rantoul; a brother, Kenneth "Pete" DeWald, and his wife, Ruth, Ottawa; sisters, Nathalee June Howard, Northglenn, Colo., Marlene Evertson, and her husband, Larry, Brandenton, Fla., Cheryl Poole, Ottawa, and Barbara Milton, and her husband, Ron, Ottawa; and grandchildren, Farren Preisner, Americus, Josh DeWald, Rantoul, and Bethany DeWald, Rantoul.
He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Beverly Joyce DeWald.
