During his senatorial career, Warner served as Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee (1999-2001 and 2003-2007) and also served as the Chair of the Senate Rules Committee (1995-1999). He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and was one of five World War II veterans serving in the Senate at the time of his retirement.
