Arthur Lee Dillard was born on November 25, 1888 in Tennessee in one of the several communities of Greenbrier, the son of Reverend James Lee Dillard (1868–1932) and his 1st wife Addie Bell (Hammers) Dillard (1869–1911). {His parents were married on November 9, 1887 in Robertson County.}

Arthur was a US Army veteran of World War I and was married to Jessie Butler Bornstein (1891-1959), the daughter of Maurice Bornstein (1858–1956) and Anna M (Starr) Bornstein (1859–1944).

A member of the Church of Christ and a mechanic, he lived in Nashville for more than 50 years. He was 73 years old, a widower and had prostate cancer and was living at 1310 Meridian Street when he died of pyelonephritis on July 27, 1962 at Nashville's Central State Hospital, where he had been for thirteen months.

Survivors included his daughter Mrs O H Wills of Nashville, sons Milton Dillard of Nashville and Neal Dillard of Totowa, New Jersey, brother Elvis Dillard of Orlando, Florida, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on July 29th at Bracey-Welsh Funeral Home, and burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Nashville.
