Fred (Ted) Tedstone Baker was born October 17, 1914 on a farm near Cordele, Texas to Alice Caroline and Fred Sherfey Baker. He grew up in the Gulf Coast area and attended Victoria Junior College before moving to Alpine where he attended Sul Ross State Teachers College. Ted graduated in 1936 with degrees in Education and Business Administration. In 1940 he married Leona Mae Starr in Marathon. Leona passed away October 27, 2006. Affectionately known as "Papa" to his grandchildren, Ted is survived by children, Fred, Jr. and Lynne; their spouses, Susan Baker and Charles Burton Dedmon; grandchildren, Kristen Baker Loden, Charles Burton Dedmon, Jr., Blake Browning Finley and Andrew Barrett Baker; great-granddaughters Eleanor Fellows Loden, Megan Caroline Dedmon and Madeline Ryun Dedmon. After teaching school briefly, Ted went to work for Southern Pacific Railroad, retiring after 40 years. His favorite pastimes were spending time with family, travel, camping with friends from railroading days and volunteering at the Thrift Shop at Asbury Methodist Church in El Paso. After living in El Paso for 50 years, Leona and Ted moved to Dallas in 2001. He passed away on November 4, 2007 at the Plaza at Edgemere. His family gratefully acknowledges the devoted care Ted received from Cindy Scott, Jerry Baker and the staff at Edgemere. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 10 at Trinity-First United Methodist Church in El Paso. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in his name to Lydia Patterson Institute, P.O. Box 11, El Paso, Texas 79940.
