Benz, Louise (nee Bremer), age 91, died July 13 after several years of declining health. Mrs. Benz was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, George W. Benz, in 1974. She is survived by three children, Josephine (Nicky) Carpenter (husband Thomas K.), Louise (Lollie) Plank, and George B. Benz (wife Karen B.); and six grandchildren, David Bremer Benz, George Martin Benz, and Theodore (Derek) Bassett Benz, James Kimberly, Virginia Elizabeth, and George Thomas Carpenter; also by 6 grandchildren; and her sister, Marie Bremer Reim, New Ulm, MN; many nieces and nephews; and her very dear friends, Charles and Elizabeth Woehrle. Louise Benz was born in St. Paul, MN on January 19, 1908, the youngest daughter of Adolf and Marie Schmidt Bremer. She graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1927 and in 1934, Louise, granddaughter of Jacob Schmidt, married George W. Benz, grandson of Theodore Hamm, uniting two of St. Paul's pioneer families. During her long and fruitful life, she pursued many interests in education, community welfare, gardening, and music. She served with dedication on many boards; the American National Bank & Trust Co., the Commercial State Bank, Family Service, St. Paul Health and Welfare Planning, St. Paul Rehabilitation Center, Greater St. Paul United Fund and Council, Summit School, Summit School Alumnae Association, St. Paul Academy & Summit School (SPASS), Young People's Symphony Concert Assoc. of the Minnesota Orchestra, Hamline University, St. John's University, St. Paul Garden Club, University of MN Arboretum, the Landmark Center, and was a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre. Mrs. Benz was a most gracious lady and a taskmaster. Kindness and generosity were her hallmarks. She aided many who needed a helping hand, often anonymously. She will be missed by all who knew her. Mass of Christian Burial will be at ST. MARY'S OF THE LAKE CATHOLIC CHURCH, at 9 AM on Saturday, July 17, 4741 Bald Eagle Avenue, White Bear Lake, MN. A reception will follow at the White Bear Yacht Club. The interment will be private for family and close friends at Calvary Cemetery. Memorials preferred to St. Paul Academy and Summit School or the donor's choice.
