A. S. NEWLIN. And yet another time have we been called upon to mourn the passing of one of the oldest citizens of White Cloud. After the paralytic stroke we watched daily for Mr. Newlin to be called to that better Land and finally on the evening of April 3 he joined the heavenly group. Mr. Newlin was past 87 years of age, having been born October 10, 1829, at New Market, N. C. His marriage to Miss Elizabeth Jane Payne, November 21, 1868, was a happy union to which five children were born : Francis King, William Clay, Alma, Avery and Blanch May. Coming to White Cloud in the fall of 1870 he engaged in the mercantile business, from which he retired 21 years ago. While in business he made many friends, as evidenced by the large number who gathered to pay him their last respect. Since his retirement he has lived with his daughter, Mrs. W. S. Snook. Mr. Newlin was preceded in death by two sons, Alma and Avery, and by his beloved wife. In early life he was a member of the Friends (Quaker) church at High Point, N. C. Besides the four children he is survived by a sister, Emily R. Farlow, and a brother, John Newlin [incorrect--Joseph Oliver Newlin], both of New Market, N. C. The services, held from the home on Thursday afternoon, were conducted by Rev. N. S. King, of the Community church, assisted by the male quartet and Mrs. C. C. Burkhalter. Mr. King's talk was a very comforting one to the bereaved. The following relatives served as pallbearers: Harry Snook, P. Snook, P. Gribling, H. T. Bradley, Martin Idol and Fred Idol. Mr. H. T. Bradley of Wathena, Mrs. S. C. Cain of Olathe, Mrs. J. L. Parks of Hiawatha, Mr. and Mrs. P. S. Snook and Mr. II. J. Snook of Robinson were the out-of-town relatives to attend the funeral.
