Born to William P. and Nora Deely Winkel, he was a World War II veteran, serving with the Army in Europe.
Mr. Winkel drove trucks for Carolina Freight for more than 30 years, retiring in 1987. He enjoyed attending civic and criminal trials at the City Hall and was so well known, he was given a seat even when standing room only cases were being heard. His hobby was baseball.
