Georgia Neal Boswell Tyson died November 9, 2007, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Monday, November 12 at 11 a.m. with burial at Lakewood Cemetery. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church.
Mrs. Tyson was born on December 18, 1916 in Oxford, Mississippi. She grew up at Sanatorium, Miss., where her father, Dr. Henry Boswell, served as superintendent of the Mississippi State Tuberculosis Sanatorium. She graduated from MSCW (now MUW) and then went on to receive a degree in medical technology from the University of Minnesota. She worked in Jackson for pediatrician, Dr. Charlie Ward. Later she served as secretary to Mrs. Power, principal of Boyd Elementary School and to Kirby Walker, superintendent of the Jackson Public School System. She also served as administrative assistant to Dr. Samuel B. Johnson, chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Medical Center, until her retirement. After retiring, she went on to serve as a volunteer for many years in the Surgical/ICU waiting room at UMC. In 1999, she was honored by the annual Jefferson Awards for her lifetime dedication to patient and family care, having logged over 6,000 volunteer hours for UMC. She was one of 41 nationwide recipients and was recognized nationally at ceremonies in Washington D.C.
She was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, where she taught both junior and senior high Sunday School. For many years, Mrs. Tyson prepared and served breakfast for the high school students in the Youth House of the church.
Mrs. Tyson is preceded in death by her husband, William L. Tyson, Jr., whom she married in 1942.
She is survived by: her son, Dr. William H. Tyson, and his wife, Mary Ann, of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida; grandchildren, Kristin Tyson Crook and her husband, George, of Franklin, Tenn., Lisa Tyson of Birmingham, Ala., Heidi Tyson of Asheville, N.C., Lt. David Tyson and his wife, Tracy, of Fort Lewis, Wash.; and great-grandchildren, Wills, David and Anna Claire Crook.
She is also survived by: her sisters, Barbara Boswell Stauss and Peggy Boswell Johnson of Jackson, and her brother, Col. Henry Boswell of Greensboro, N.C.
