Hélène and her mother were killed in the Bazar de la Charité fire on May 4, 1897.

"Mme Delaune and her only daughter Hélène Delaune went to the Bazar de la Charité on May 4, 1897, at the invitation of a friend who was a saleswoman.

As the fire started, they rushed to the door on rue Jean-Goujon. Madame Delaune was determined to save her daughter or die with her, but, separated by the crowd, she made it out alone.

Noticing that her daughter remained inside, Mme Delaune returned to the bazaar, in the midst of the flames. Pushed aside and trampled by the crowd, her daughter had fallen and could get up, while her skirts were burning. Her mother tried to free her by pulling her by the legs. The fire spread to her own clothes and a piece of tarpaulin falls on their heads.

After superhuman efforts, she finally managed to pull her out of the heap of other victims and found the strength to carry her outside.

There was, however, little hope of saving them. Very seriously burned, Hélène Delaune died on May 15, 1897 at 9 o'clock in the evening, joined an hour later by her mother."
