Jefferson City News-Tribune (MO) - Wednesday, December 1, 2004:

Sister Mary Gabriel (Clara) Landwehr, 99, died Thursday, November 25, 2004, at Incarnate Word Retirement Community, San Antonio, Texas.

Sister Mary Gabriel had been a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word for 75 years. Born to Fred and Theresa (Mehmert) Landwehr on September 30, 1905, in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was part of a large close-knit family. Her family moved to Jefferson City in 1908.

She was a founding member of Immaculate Conception Parish. She graduated from Immaculate Conception School and then worked at Dallmeyer's Dry Goods Store. She was 22 years old when she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in 1927, celebrating her first vows in 1929 and perpetual vows in 1934.

After completing her undergraduate degree at Incarnate Word College (now the University of the Incarnate Word, or UIW), Sister Mary Gabriel spent 31 years of her life in dedicated service to children of many communities, teaching or serving in leadership roles in Blessed Sacrament School and Incarnate Word Academy, St. Louis, Mo., St. Margaret's Home, El Paso, Texas, St. Peter-St. Joseph Home, San Antonio, Texas and St. Mary's Academy, Amarillo, Texas.

For seven years, she was Prefect, Dean of Women at Incarnate Word College (now UIW), San Antonio, Texas. In the process, she also found time to pursue post-graduate studies at St. Louis University and Catholic University of America. In addition, she ministered internally to the Congregation through her service to leadership teams, using her literary gifts to facilitate communication, work and mission of the Sisters. For a number of years, she welcomed and prepared young women to live out their call to service in the Congregation and was the Director of the Novitiate for three years.

Always one to see beauty in the simplicity of God's work, once Sister Mary Gabriel saw a bouquet of flowers and reflected, "I hope my life is as beautiful to God as these flowers are to me." Her sisters and co-workers remember her as a very pleasant person who expected the very best of everyone. Sister Mary Gabriel was a voracious reader and was in tune with what was happening in the world as well as in the lives of her friends and family. She was quick to offer a smile and kind word to all whom she met.

Sister Mary Gabriel is survived and dearly missed by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Frank (Mildred) Landwehr, Jefferson City, Mo.; nieces and nephews; many relatives and friends in the United States; and by her Sisters in the Incarnate World. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Josephine Landwehr and Minnie Landwehr; and seven brothers, Frederick Landwehr, Harry Landwehr, Ben Landwehr, Fred Landwehr, Louis Landwehr, Frank Landwehr, and Carl Landwehr.

A Mass of Christian Burial and Interment were held on November 29, 2004, in San Antonio. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Jefferson City. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, P.O. Box 15378, San Antonio, TX 78212.
