Educated at the Johnstown Academy. Worked on his father's farm until 1845 when he became a merchant. In 1848 he became a partner in the store of Burton & Gross. Later he was in a very successful business making gloves until the factory burned down around 1871. He then became Vice-President of the Fonda, Johnstown and Gloversville Railroad. He was elected to County Treasurer in 1860, and in 1880-81 was elected to the state legislature. He was also the president of the then village of Johnstown. He attended the Presbyterian church.
