He was a student at Virginia Military Institute (VMI) for ten months over a two year period (Class of 1872). He was killed by a train. He was a partner in his father's law firm in St. Louis, Missouri and in railroad service.

John Herbert Latrobe Claiborne was a direct descendant of COL William Claiborne who was sent by the Virginia Company of London to Jamestown, Virginia in 1621 from England as a Surveyor for the colony.
