Wilmington - Dr. Robert Jackson Andrews, 100, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his children, on June 9, 2021.

Bob was born in Wilmington, NC and raised in Sloop Point (Pender Co.) and Wilmington, the son of the late Edna Hall Andrews and Vermon Williams Andrews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Leila Carwile Andrews; brother, Claude D. Andrews (LaVera); sister, Ruth A. Robinson (Norman); and in-laws on his wife's side of the family: Frances Arrington (Bob), Dorothy Woodhurst (Stan), Addison Carwile, Jr. (Marianne), John Preston Carwile, and Beth McLeod.

He is survived by his eldest son R. Jackson "Jack" Andrews, Jr. (Terry), daughter Kayren Andrews Hobbs (Steve), and youngest son A. Williams "Bill" Andrews, Sr. (Carole); his eight grandchildren, who affectionately called him Grandbob: Lewis Hobbs, Trey Andrews (Canaan), Brittany Andrews Conradie (Phillip), Elise Hobbs Gannaway (Sean), Emily Hobbs, Caroline Andrews, Addison Andrews, Jr., and Leila Andrews; four great-grandchildren: Whittaker Conradie, Beckett Andrews, Madelé Conradie, and Lennon Dorian; his sister-in-law Gloria Carwile; his brother-in-law Gene McLeod, and 15 nieces and nephews and their families whom he also loved so very much.

Bob was a graduate of New Hanover High School and UNC-Chapel Hill, where he earned his Bachelor of Medicine degree. He completed his medical education at the University of Tennessee - College of Medicine in Memphis. After graduation, he fulfilled his commitment to the U.S. Navy by serving as a primary care physician in Washington, DC. Upon completion of service to his country, Bob served his alma mater as a physician in the UNC Student Infirmary. He then opened a private practice in Roxboro, NC, where he met, fell in love, and married the Educational Director at the local Baptist church, Mary Leila Carwile. They relocated to Bob's hometown of Wilmington in 1958 so he could fulfill his life's dream of providing medical care to his many family members and friends. He established his medical practice in collaboration with Cape Fear Memorial Hospital, where he served the community faithfully for the next 46 years. The New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society awarded Bob the Health Care Heroes Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018, honoring his professional service and impact on the quality of healthcare in the community.

Bob also served his community in other ways. He was a long-time member and leader of the Azalea Kiwanis Club, the Smith Creek Investment Club, the Executive Club, the New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society, and the Hanover Seaside Club.

In addition to a career that lasted almost six decades, Bob had other loves in his life. He loved the Lord and the Lord's people, particularly those who worshipped and served alongside him at Temple Baptist Church. He loved his best friend, Mary Leila. He loved his family. He loved the UNC Tar Heels. "Let's Go Heels!"

Special thanks to family, friends, and church family for their care and concern, especially during his years of declining health. Also, our sincere gratitude for the HomeInstead staff and caretakers who provided loving support over these past years as well as the clinicians of Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, who cared for him in his final weeks. Particular thanks go to his private aides: Shondell, Toni, Vicki, and Regina.

A private interment will take place at Oleander Memorial Gardens. A celebration of Bob's life will be held at Temple Baptist Church next month, Sunday, July 25 at 3:30 p.m. with a visitation and reception immediately afterward in the fellowship hall. A livestream of the service on July 25 will be available on the Temple Baptist Church Facebook page.
