George was the son of George Washington and Merib Susan (Rowley) Patterson.
George was a Yale graduate and a winner of the Croix de Guerre with Palms as a member of the foreign legion during World War I.
On 15 June 1918 he married Susan Parker Ryerson, daughter of Arthur Larned Ryerson who lost his life in the sinking of RMS Titanic. Susan was herself a survivor of the tragedy.
After the war George and his wife returned to the United States and settled in New Jersey. Sadly, Susan, or "Suzette" as she was known, died in 1921.
After the death of his wife, George went on a long sailing trip. He was understandably depressed at the sudden death of his beloved wife, when their lives should have just been beginning.
After several months away, George returned, and tried to get on with life as best as he could.
In July 1924 he married Grace Virginia Pomeroy Hendrick.
On 19 February 1925, George disappeared from his home. He had left a note telling his family he intended to take his own life and would do it in a way that his body would never be found. He had felt that he was a failure in business and life.
It is believed that he jumped off a ship at sea.
