John Herbert Claiborne was b. May 30, 1763 and died in Feb. 1846. He m. (1) Mary Cole Gregory, December 13, 1788 and (2) Ann Jones, September 23, 1802.

Although he was young during the Revolutionary War, John Herbert Claiborne was a vedette under COL Henry (Light-Horse Harry) Lee father of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. John Herbert Claiborne was a lawyer and planter in Dinwiddie County and later Brunswick County but gave up his law practice to become a Methodist preacher.

In 1826, as a residnet of Brunswick County, he wanted to sell his former residence in Dinwiddie County which consisted of 500 acres on Hatcher's Run. It had a mill. His son John Gregory Claiborne was authorized to sell it for him.

(2) Martha Ann Claiborne, m. (1) Nicholas Edmunds Lewis, (2) Devereaux Jarratt Claiborne.
