He was born September 19, 1908 in the Town of Scott to Herman Carl and Martha (Schulz) Hackbarth. He married Elizabeth Jopke on June 17, 1931 in Merrill.
In the course of his career he worked as a cheese maker in the Town of Scott from 1924 to 1936, then at the L. A. Jopke Hide Company until 1954. He then worked 19 years as a laborer at R. O. W. Windows until he retired in 1973. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking and the outdoors.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday October 12, 1993 in Merrill. Rev. Kenneth Albers officiated and burial took place at Merrill Memorial Park.
