"Ed Bales Passes Away - At 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon, Ed Bales, the expressman, passed away as a result of the injuries recently recently. Deceased has been an expressman here for some time and was formerly mail carrier for our local post office, and was an industrious, steady worker. He came from Redding to Vallejo some years ago."
Elwood was the son of David Bales and Anna (Hobson) Bales Marley. Elwood was married two times. His first wife was Susannah Jane "Jennie" (Snow) Bales Popham Bayse (1842-1907). Elwood and Susannah were married on March 28, 1858 in Morgan County, Indiana. They had at least five children together including: Alice, Albert, Rhoda, Morton and Janie Bales. Elwood and Susannah were divorced on July 15, 1884 in Gilpin County, Colorado. Elwood then married Laura (maiden name unknown) about 1895 and they had at least one child together - Vernon Bales.
