He was born at Lake Fork, Illinois, a son of William Arend and Lettie Belle [SMITH] ROBINSON. He married Harriet Humiston LESTER on the 29th of April 1925 at Pontiac.

In 1917, at just 15 years of age, he worked after school at the Williams Mill, located at the corners of Mill & Water Street in Pontiac. He recieved $10 per week. Later, when his family found they needed the money, he quit school for awhile, working full time. He had to obtain written permission and a work permit. Only a few people worked at the Mill, sometimes only the owner, Roger Williams and James were there. The William's Mill burned down the day before Easter, 1955. James met his wife Harriet on one of his deliveries, while working for Neff Grocery, and they were married for 69 years. Mr. ROBINSON, who was educated in Pontiac schools, owned and operated Red Top Cab and then Jim's Cab Co. until 1955. He was an investigator for the Illinois Commerce Commission in the 1960's and was a dispatcher for the Livingston County Sheriff's Department during the 1970s.
