After graduating high school, Bill enlisted in the US Navy, serving aboard the USS Essex and the Forestal Class USS Independence (the decommissioning and later dismantling of the latter was a sad and deeply moving thing for him). After active duty, Bill served in the Reserves. He went on to work in computer programming (before most people had even heard of it) for a number of companies, including IBM, SUNY, Seibles Bruce, and Litton Computer Services. He retired from BASF in 2001.
Bill was a gifted musician who played with a number of bands, including "Time Tunnel," named after a 1960s science fiction television series starring James Darren. Years later, he reunited with the members of Time Tunnel to record their songs. It was a gift to family and friends, both his and his bandmates'. He loved recording his daughters' beautiful voices, playing guitar, and writing songs. He was a voracious reader, had a wonderfully curious mind, and enjoyed puzzles. His wit was legendary. He absolutely loved trains--models and otherwise--and was, for many years, a private pilot who still enjoyed talking about planes and reminiscing about his time in the air. Bill had an avid interest in family history, and spent many hours tracing his roots. He was an active contributor on Find A Grave.
Bill was a devout Roman Catholic, and he was active in his church. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, past Grand Knight of Don Bosco 7784 (Newton, New Jersey), and a member of the Endicott Counsel 1839.
Bill was active on social media and with his high school friends, and spent much time and generous energy acting as administrator for Facebook groups dedicated to his home towns and to his school. He undertook a project to scan yearbooks from Blue Ridge and to collect and catalogue school-related memorabilia.
Bill adored and was adored by his precious canine companion, Junie B. Jones.
At the time of his passing, Bill was survived by his lovely wife and five daughters and their partners, 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, as well as one brother, three sisters-in-law, and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and wonderful friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clark W. and Lula Howell, sister Donna Cramer (Robert), son-in-law Toby Martin, brothers-in-law John Russell, Richard Russell, and infant Joey Russell, sister-in-law Shirley Howell, and a nephew, Joe Russell.
Bill is missed, and will be missed for a very long time.
