John Alexander "Alick" Waugh was born 1871 in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England, the second son of Dr. Alexander Waugh, a physician, and Annie Gosse Morgan. He had four siblings, Arthur, Constance, Beatrice and Elspeth. Alick was the uncle of the writer Evelyn Waugh (Decline and Fall, Brideshead Revisited).

The young seafaring Alick left home early and became a lieutenant in the British Royal Navy. He married Florence Isabel Webster on 18 Jan 1898 in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Born there in 1868, she was the daughter of Alexander George Webster and Louisa Harriet Turnley of Hobart.

Soon afterwards, Alick and his new wife returned to Midsomer Norton, where he died of malaria on 2 Sep 1900, aged 29. The family buried him in St. John the Baptist Churchyard in Midsomer Norton. Alick and Florence had one son, Eric Cadogan Waugh, born in Midsomer Norton, six months before his father's death.

Florence and her son later returned to Hobart, Tasmania, where Eric, a solicitor, married Katherine Elsie Clarke in 1929. Alick's widow Florence died in 1931 in Hobart after a motor lorry struck her, aged 63.
