MATT SCHLEIS

Poisoning Takes Life of 74 -Year Old Tisch Mills -
A 75 year old man was found dead and his wife, 63, in critical condition, as the result of a carbon monoxide poisoning at the home Thursday morning.
Matt Schleis, a retired harness maker, and his wife were found by neighbors in a bedroom of their home located in Tisch Mills, just over the Manitowoc County border line, in Kewaunee County. According to Darwin Legois Kewaunee County Sheriff, the poisoning resulted from a blocked vent in the LP gas heater system. He said there were two vents leading to the outside of the home for circulation and that Mr. Schleis had apparently blocked off one of the vents feeling that too much heat was being lost. The blockage was due to a cover from a peanut butter jar.
Found Breathing
Legois said Kewaunee County coroner Victor Cherovsky estimated the time of death at about 7 am. The accident was discovered at about 11 am.
Kewaunee County authorities surmised that Mr. Schleis had blocked off the vent, which ran partially into his bedroom, and then had taken a walk into his wife's room. His body was found slumped over her bed and she was still in bed.
Mrs. Schleis was found breathing and moved to a couch in the living room. There was no vent running through her room but there was one close to it, in the hallway.
Legois said authorities began to search for a means of poisoning immediately because of the heavy white foam around Mr. Schleis face which is indicative of gas poisoning.
Funeral services for Mr. schleis will be at 9:15 am Monday at Klein & Stangel Inc., Funeral Home, Two Rivers, and at 10 am at St. Mary Catholic Church, Tisch Mills, the Rev. Donald Feller officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
Retired in 1952
Mr. Schleis was born Sept 5, 1884, at Stangelville, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Schleis. He married the former Blanche Zimmerhakel at Tish Mills nearly ?? years ago. After marriage the couple operated a farm near Tish Mills retiring to the village in 1952.
Besides his wife he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Daniel ?? of Two Rivers, a son, Vernon ? operating the home ? on Rt. 1, Mishicot, four ? sisters, Miss Emily, Mrs. Michael?? and Mrs. Frank Meyer? of Milwaukee and Mrs. F?? rest is too light to read.
