Hulbert attended Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and graduated in 1923 with a degree in engineering. He had a brother named James G. Young and a sister named Gertrude Young. [Obituary, published in The Boston Herald (Boston, Massachusetts) on Sept. 21, 1974.]

Hulbert is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Wayland. He is the son of Hulbert Young and Ada (Gillin) Young. Grandson of Nicholas, "Uncle Nick" Young who was the secretary for the National Association of Professional Baseball Players, managed the Washington team from 1871-1873, and also served as a league umpire. He was also secretary, treasurer and president of the National League.
