Al Schwamlein: Former councilman dies at 67: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

Cherokee Tribune (Canton, GA) - January 15, 2009

Deceased Name: Al Schwamlein: Former councilman dies at 67

Memorial services will be Saturday for a former Canton City Councilman and longtime local pharmacist.

Al Schwamlein, 67, of Canton died Friday, and services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at First Baptist Canton.

The family will receive friends at Huey Funeral Home in Canton from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday. Donations may be made to the Heart Fund or Youth Mission Fund at First Baptist Canton.

Schwamlein served on the council for 12 years - from January of 1977 through Dec. 31, 1988 - as a councilman from Ward III.
He most recently served the city as a member of the Canton Tourism Inc. board and last year's Citizen Stakeholder Committee, which was appointed to aid with the comprehensive plan update.

Born in Pottsville, Penn., Schwamlein earned his bachelor of science degree in chemistry and his pharmacy degree from the University of Georgia. He married his wife, Linda, before beginning his service with the Fourth Armored Division of the U.S. Army in Germany. Upon their return, the couple moved to Canton in 1969 where they established themselves as pharmacist and teacher. Schwamlein worked at Fincher's Pharmacy in downtown Canton and then joined Wayne Brown at the Canton Eckerd Drugs, where they worked together for 23 years. In addition to his public service with the city, Schwamlein also was a Scout Master for Troop 241 and served on the board of G. Cecil Pruett Community Center Family YMCA. He was both a member and a deacon at First Baptist Canton. His son, Brannon Schwamlein of Woodstock, said his father will be remembered for his love of life.
"I think it's his relationships with people that I'll long remember, for he lived life full and never met a stranger," he said. "Everyone who knew him loved him, and everyone he knew understood that they were loved. He loved his family. He loved his church. He loved the game of golf, and he loved his Georgia Bulldogs."

Other survivors include one daughter, Leigh Ann Brown of Roswell; one sister, Sandra Moore of Augusta; and two grandchildren, Zach Brown and Rachel Brown of Roswell.
