Meg was the daughter of Winfield Scott and Rachel R. (Johnson) Goebel. She married Stanley Manton Barnes on 16 June 1950 in Los Angeles County. She lived 14 years in Corcoran for 17 years, before moving to Visalia in 1976. She was the Corcoran Chamber of Commerce's woman of the year in 1969 and was a Girl Scout Troop Leader in Corcoran for 20 years. She also was active in American Field Services and California Women for Agriculture. Surviving are her husband, Stanley: a daughter Carolyn of Clovis: two sons, Allen of Davis and David of Menlo Park; a brother, Lawrence Goebel of San Diego; two sisters, Jeanine Swift of Playa del Rey and Elain King of Canoga Park; and five grandchildren. Her passing proceeds her daughter Janet.

The family requests that any remembrance be sent to the Meg Barnes Memorial Fund, Golden Valley Girl Scouts Council.
