7893 Rifleman A E Dobbins, 2nd Battalion the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He deployed with his battalion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing from India on 16 Sep 1899 and arriving in Natal on 30 Sep 1899. Its first engagement was on 24 Oct 1899 at Rietfontein. They fought at the battle of Lombard's Kop or Ladysmith on 30 Oct 1899 (8 killed, 30 wounded). They formed part of the garrison of Ladysmith during the siege. In the great attack of 6 Jan 1900 four companies of the battalion were sent in the early morning as reinforcements to Wagon Hill, where they took part in the furious fighting (11 killed and about 35 wounded). Rifleman Dobbins died of enteric fever (typhoid) at the Intombi Military Hospital, Ladysmith.
