DR FREDERICK L WELLMAN RALEIGH — Dr Frederick Love-ioy Wellman 96 of 501 E Whitaker Mill Road died Thursday April 21 1994 at Rex Hospital Dr Wellman received his Masters and PhD Degrees from the University of Wisconsin He was employed for a time by United Fruit Company as a Plant Pathologist He later joined the US Department of Agriculture in Florida Most of his professional life was spent in Central America El Salvador and Costa Rica working on coffee and banana diseases While there he wrote several books on tropical plant pathology and spent time teaching many students Dr Wellman was instrumental in creating the Caribbean division of the American Phyto-pathological Society Following his retirement in 1963 Dr Wellman spent a year in Puerto Rico and then came to NC State University to teach and consult in plant pathology While a faculty member at NCSU Dr Wellman wrote 3 books on tropical plant pathology On December 24 1990 Dr Wellman was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years Dora U'Ren Wellman Surviving is his son Frederick Creighton Wellman IV of the home A memorial service will be held at 11 am Saturday at Highland United Methodist Church The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 pm Friday in the Atrium of Building B of Whitaker Glen Retirement Center 501 E Whitaker Mill Road
