Mary Helen was born October 29, 1927 in Towanda, Bradford, Pennsylvania, to Mildred Clara (Eastabrook) Morrow and J. Andrew "Andy" Morrow. She was the fourth girl born to the Morrow's, and was almost twelve years younger than her sister Dorothea, and seventeen years younger than her sister Marian. (Their sister Kathryn only lived two months.) Mary Helen was a welcome addition to the family, and her sisters doted on her, and lovingly helped their mother Mildred raise her.
Dorothea and Mary Helen also spent a lot of time playing with their cousin Elizabeth "Betty" Eastabrook, and in later life, Betty, who was only nine years older, was one of Mary Helen's best friends.
Mary Helen enjoyed her early life, growing up as a middle class young woman, her father a respected educator and her mother a music teacher and housewife. All of the girls were especially fond of their father Andy, who loved them dearly and taught them all about being kind, generous, and hard-working.
In 1946, Mary Helen began attending Bloomsburg State Teacher's College, in Bloomsburg, Penn., 65 miles south of her hometown of Towanda. During her time there she was a member of the Bloomsburg Players drama club, the Women's Chorus, the Waller Hall Association where she lived on campus, and the Alpha Psi Omega Honor Society. In her second year at the college, she met a handsome young Navy man just back from the War named John Waverka.
Mary Helen graduated in 1949, and secured a position at the R. W. Lowery firm of consulting engineers in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania's capital. Meanwhile John became a cadet in nearby Hershey with the Pennsylvania State Police. As a mounted state "Trooper" at that time, most men were unmarried, so John had to get permission from his superior officer to get married, but not until after the second year of his enlistment.
Finally, in 1954 Mary Helen married the love of her life Trooper John Waverka.
Together they bought a comfortable house in Hershey, and began to raise a family, ending up with four boys and a girl. Mary Helen was a very busy wife and mother, but she and John taught all their children to be independent, along with the other virtues the two had learned. When visiting for a fun-filled Christmas, it was always fun to see all the items lined up on the steps leading upstairs, each child having one step, where they were to pick up their socks or whatever, and take to their rooms.
In May 1986, at only 59 years of age, her dear husband John passed away, and the entire family was heart broken. He had left them many, many years too soon.
Mary Helen lived on for many years, and was a constant joy to her family, and a character few will ever forget. She lived to be 93.
... Her Funeral Mass took place on 29 June 2021.
