Excerpt:
"The first business place in the present village was begun by Casper Hessel. Later, the place was taken over by Charles Hessel, Sr. In later years, the establishment was moved a short distance and is now the Louis Hessel place."

Early Manitowoc County History, episode 228, by John Harmon (reporter)
EXCERPT:
"The thriving village of Francis Creek might have been known as Hesselville had that family not been so modest.

The Hessels were pretty much the backbone of Francis Creek in 1917. C. J. Hessel and John Ewan operated a large produce market and general store.

Frank Hessel was the proprietor of the French Creek House and saloon. His sons-Edward and Louis-helped out on the general store. Charles Hessel, Sr., and Robert Hessel were prominent farmers in the area. Charles Hessel, Jr., ran the hotel.

But there were other influential families at Francis Creek in the early 1900s"
