Alfred Lane was a Texas Ranger who was attacked and killed by Indians coming home from a cattle drive on Cement Mountain, Young County, Texas. A pioneer of Palo Pinto County, cattleman; brother-in-law of Charles Goodnight (famous cattleman and trail driver). Alfred had dreamed the night before his death that his parents were killed by Indians. Alfred was temporarily buried on Cement Mountain, and later his body was interred at Crawford Cemetery, miles west of Black Springs (Now Oran) in Palo Pinto County, Texas. He was the son of James Lane b. 1795 in TN and Mary (unkn). Survived by sister, Mattie Sheek. He married Elizabeth Ann Goodnight; they had the following children: James Martin, Emily, Van Ransellaes, Laura Ellen who married (1) Samuel Van Swearinger and (2) his brother, Robert Swearingen; Sarah Jane "Jennie" who married Shaeffer Hearne Vaughan; and William Thomas Lane.
