Jean Dain Waters died peacefully in her home with family at her side at the age of 100 on Friday, June 11, 2021.

Jeanne Frances Dain was born in 1921 in Saint Paul, Minn., to James McLellan Dain and Katherine Eastman Dain. She was raised in Minneapolis, attended Northrup School, Rosemary Hall in Greenwich, CT, and Bennett Junior College in Millbrook, NY.

During World War II, Jean served in the American Red Cross in Washington DC. In 1946, she married George Franklin Waters of Minneapolis, and they moved to Rochester MN.

Jean was on the boards of the Minnesota Mental Health Association and the National Hypertension Association. As Miss Jean the Subteen, she was the buyer for girls' clothing at Massey's Department Store. She was president of the Rochester Civic Theatre for many years. Jean played leading roles in Kiss Me Kate, Lion in Winter, and Auntie Mame, and earned the Best Actress Award in 1973.

In 1975 she founded Fitnastics, an exercise and dance program, and taught classes in the Plummer House ballroom for 40 years. She was beloved by her students.

Active throughout her life in the Calvary Episcopal Church, she assisted direction of the children's choir and was a lector, greeter, and a member of the Seraphim III Liturgical Dance group.

Jean had many interests and talents, playing piano, guitar, and singing at various events. Three weeks before she died, she was honored at the Rochester Golf and Country Club for her 71 years of membership and was accompanied at the piano, singing her favorite songs, "I remember you" and "With all my heart."

She was a tournament level tennis player who played the game into her 90s. She was unmatched at backgammon, winning games until the day she died.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Franklin Waters, in 2015. They were married for 69 years.

She is survived by three daughters: Dain Waters, Brenda Waters, M.D., and Anne Waters, Psy.D.; granddaughter, Lindsey Parker-Waters Di Muro, and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church at 4:00 PM on July 10. A reception will follow immediately at the Plummer House, 1091 Plummer Lane SW, Rochester, MN. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Calvary Episcopal Church.
