Foster Blodgett Sr. was the son of Joseph Blodgett and Thankful Hawks Blodgett of Deerfield, Massachusetts and later Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire. He was the eldest of thirteen children.

In 1821, Foster came to Augusta, Georgia and was in the mercantile business. He married Susan Eliza Perdue of Aiken County, South Carolina and they had four children named Foster, Edwin Hawks, Mary Eliza, and William Austin.

In 1836, Blodgett volunteered as one of the Richmond Blues sent to fight the Indians in Florida in the Seminole War. Through the greatest daring and boldness, he swam the Withlacoochee River, bearing the colors of his company, with Indians in the woods on the opposite side of the river. His comrades gave him the title "Withlacoochee".

In 1837, Blodgett was elected City Marshall of Augusta, and he served the city for five years. He retired, but five years later the people in authority thought it imperative that he return as City Marshall again. He served for another five years and then finally retired.
In the later years of his life, Foster served as a member of the City Council, and as Judge of the Inferior Court of Richmond County.

The occupation that was truly a labor of love for him was being Manager of the Augusta Orphan Asylum. This institution was dear to his heart and he devoted a lot of time and energy to it.

Foster was a member of the Baptist Church of Augusta for twenty-eight years.

He died of an abscess and was sixty years and twelve days old.

Note: The family spelled their surname with one "t". But for purposes of linking family members and for the fact later generations spelled it with "TT" and to connect on findagrave with other Blodgett cousins who spelled into with "tt" The family will use the Blodgett spelling on findagrave.

(Foster Blodgett is my three times great grandmother's brother.)

Inscription

In Memory of
Foster Blodget

Born in Deerfield, Mass, Dec. 28, 1798
Died in Augusta, Geo, Jan'y 9, 1859

In the 61st Year of His age

"Stern in his integrity, active in his usefulness,
he discharged all the various duties, devolved
upon him by his fellow citizens, with a faithfulness a like honorable to himself and to those in whose services he was engaged. From the year 1821, when he came to this city, to his death, he enjoyed the confidence of all who knew him, and justly earned a character above reproach. The records of Augusta, and the Hearts of her People, furnish his eulogy."
