Hugo was born in Giesen, Germany. At the age of 6, through the help of the Red Cross, he emigrated with his mother and sister on the last ship to South Africa in January 1939, just before the start of World War 2.
He married his wife Hilda in 1954 after which he emigrated to start a new life and raise a family in Salisbury, Rhodesia. He was a prominent and active member of the Salisbury Jewish community until he and Hilda returned to Cape Town in 1983. Following their children, they moved to Plantation, Florida in 1993.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Hilda and his three children Ivor, Janet and Bryan their spouses Myra, Dennis and Susan as well as five grandsons, four granddaughters, four great grandchildren and his sister Renate Sulman.
