The following information was provided by EllaMae, member #47736836:
"He was found on a French battlefield by a German soldier and taken home by that soldier. Johann was well educated, it seems--I have seen examples of his writing and it is beautiful. It was said that he was a bookkeeper on a steamship line in St. Louis, but what I have found leads me to think he was an "engineer" and maybe working with the engines? The story handed down is that he was drowned in the flooded Smoky Hill River when returning from a business trip to St.Louis."
No obituary or death notice has yet been found but an article in the July 29, 1880 Ellsworth Reporter states that the Smoky Hill River has been high and impassable for a week so perhaps flood story is true.
