MRS. SAPP FUNERAL HELD

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 18.—Funeral services were held this afternoon at 1550 California street, for Mrs. Ella Ellsworth Sapp, a resident of Carmel, and a descendant of Oliver Ellsworth, first chief-justice of Connecticut. Mrs. Sapp, who was born in West Berkshire, Vt. on May 31, 1852, had made her home in the Monterey county beach city for the past 12 years.

Biographical Notes:
Ella was the first wife of Dexter T. Sapp, and married on March 19, 1873, in Greenville, Michigan, with John Lewis and C C Ellsworth as witnesses. The couple had 2 daughters together, Reva [O'Connor], and Margie. The marriage between Ella and Dexter was not to last and they divorced on October 24, 1892, in Denver, Colorado.

Their daughter Margie died in the early 1890's. Reva married John Roy O'Connor (her first marriage and his second) in 1906, and spent much time in South America, where her husband was with a bank.

In an application in 1924, when she applied for a passport to visit her daughter and family in Venezuela, she gave her full name and noted that she was born on the border of Vermont and Canada, to American parents temporarily residing in Canada. She noted the death of her husband, Dexter T Sapp, on September 5, 1920, in Denver, Colorado. At the time of the application, she resided in Carmel-by-the-Sea, in Monterey County, California.

In the 1930 census in San Francisco city, she was a patient at the Dante Sanitarium, and was noted as born in Michigan, and divorced, her father born in Vermont and her mother in New York. In the 1920 census in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Monterey County, California, she was listed as divorced, born in Canada (American citizen), her father native of Vermont and her mother of New York. In the 1900 census at Precinct 1, Denver city Ward 3, Arapahoe, Colorado, Ella had her daughter Reva with her. Ella was recorded as divorced, born in May 1852, in Canada (English), with her father born in Vermont and her mother in New York. Reva was noted as born in January 1876 in Michigan, with her father born in Michigan, and mother Canadian English. Reva was a full-time newspaper reporter. In the 1880 census at Greenville, Montcalm, Michigan, Ella and her husband Dexter had two children with them, Reva born about 1876 in Michigan, and Margie, born about 1879 in Michigan. Ella was recorded as born in Canada with a father born in Vermont.

In the 1870 census, Ella, age 18, born in Vermont, was in Greenville, Montcalm, Michigan, with the family of John Lewis 38, a lawyer, Maria [Marcia] A Lewis 34, Milo Lewis 14, and Gracie Lewis 11.

In 1860, in the census of Berkshire, Franklin, Vermont, lived Cassius "Elsworth" age 29 born in Vermont, his wife Mary age 29 born in Canada E, and his children, "Alla" age 8 born in Vermont, DeForest age 6, William age 4, Asa age 1. All of the children were born in Vermont. Cassius was a teamster. "Alla" was our Ella. Cassius died from a gun shot wound in 1865. In his military death record, was noted that he died from exhaustion from an amputated left femur, in Sickel General Hospital, in Alexandria, Virginia. He was the son of William C Ellsworth and his wife, Pamela.

In Ella's passport application of 1916, was a very long letter, written by a Milo Lewis, a son of Marcia Ellsworth Lewis, wife of John Lewis, that gave the history of Ella's parentage. In the letter, was the information that Ella was the daughter of Cassius Wirt Ellsworth.
Her mother, Mary Elizabeth (Titeman) Ellsworth, daughter of David Titeman, married Joshua Ferrin on September 24, 1868, in Berkshire, Franklin, Vermont. In 1870, they were together in that place, along with Mary's sons William Ellsworth, and Asa Ellsworth, and a daughter Anna Ferrin, age 2 months. There is a death record for Mary "Titemore Farrand", whose father was given as David Titemore, who died November 16, 1872, at age 40, 6 months and 12 days, in Berkshire, Vermont, from dropsy.
