Jack Lee Akin, 65, left life on Earth, as we know it, on May 13, 2021, for the happy hunting ground to ride the rails and go fishing with those who were called home before him. In the beginning, born November 9, 1955, Jack was raised in and attended school in Grove City, Ohio, where he took special pride in playing cornet as part of the Grove City High School bands. Jack's employment history began with grilling burgers at Burger King. Shortly afterwards, like his late father, dear Uncle Ted & his brother, Jack became an Airman. Following enlistment in the US Air Force, he served at Lackland (TX), Keesler (MS) & Shaw (SC), where he specialized in Radio operations [like his future father-in-law], maintenance & communications, including ground support. Back home in Ohio, he relocated to then Columbus' far north-side, and he worked at "the old" Jerry's Drive-In. Enjoying working outdoors, he worked for Sharon Township, followed by trimming trees for 10 years for his revered friend Dennis Faulkner's Corrective Treecare. Subsequent to producing plastics, back in Grove City at their Electro-General plant, he literally "was up (trimming) a tree" when offered his next career opportunity. Jack was offered a job at & spent close to the next 15 years devoted to working with the youth at Worthington's United Methodist Children's Home. Jack spent many of those years dedicated to supervising their third shift crew. In 2005, Jack's vocational niche took one last turn. Jack spent his final 16 years working for ARC Industries alongside the Franklin County Board of (Mentally Retardation &) Developmental Disabilities, starting as a temporary employee and ending as the Manager of their Central Division of Environmental Services. As a child, Jack was preceded in death by his father Jack Edwin Akin, and more recently by his mother Mary (nee Arledge), his brother James, & his parents-in-law D Ralph & Margaret (Mardy) Church. He is survived by sisters-in-law Mardy (Michael) Dane & Holly (Jerry) Wendell, brother-in-law Ralph Church, along with 8 nieces & nephews, & 8 great nieces & nephews. Jack is heartbreakingly missed by his wife of over 30 years, Lynn Church-Akin, of Greater Worthington, and sincerely missed by numerous companions, including friends, neighbors & particularly by many of his fellow co-workers. Jack especially enjoyed taking weekend drives, exploring & the outdoors, gardening, photography, cooking – especially grilling, playing pool & cards – especially euchre, &, to say the least, technology. Jack was an affectionately devoted pet parent to Butterscotch, Jailbird & Cat. Evoking the spirit of Jack Lee Akin: co-workers, friends & family are invited to attend a Celebration of Jack's Life on Saturday, July 24, 2021 @ 1:00 pm @ the Dragonfly Daycamp @ 685 W Powell Rd, Lewis Center, Ohio 43065. Reverend Paul Hartje, a former fellow UMCH co-worker, graciously has agreed to guide the ceremony. Attendees are invited to remain after the service & "make it an afternoon affair". Bring a picnic or sack lunch, a Frisbee, soccer or basketball [hoop provided], and/or go for a hike in a place Jack often explored. A generous size grill is available adjacent to the shelter house, and "Catch & Release" fishing is permitted, no license required, at the camp pond. The Dragonfly Daycamp is located 3 miles north of Interstate 270. The camp can be reached by taking either US Route 23 or OH Route 315 north from I-270. The camp entrance is located @ 685 W Powell Rd, halfway between US -23 & OH-315. Turn left/west off US-23, OR turn right/east off OH-315 ONTO Powell Rd. The camp entrance is located .7 miles from either Route. The camp entrance is well marked by a large "park brown" sign, at a traffic light. The entrance is directly opposite the High Meadow housing development entrance & Highmeadows Village Drive. [Note: Though part of the Columbus & Franklin County Metro Parks' Highbanks Park, the Dragonfly Daycamp has a separate entrance area from the main park, and cannot be accessed from the main park entrance on US-23.] Interment will be at Grove City Cemetery, alongside his father, at a later date. It is highly encouraged that EVERYONE tell ALL how much you love them & hug them tightly, & for ALL not already vaccinated against the lethal Coronavirus to do so.
