On graduating Yale College in 1831, he studied law at Lexington, and graduated at the Law Department of Transylvania University.
He engaged in the practice of law, and stood in the highest rank of the profession. He was much in public life. He represented his county and district in both houses of the State Legislature, and was a member of the Convention which framed the present Constitution of Kentucky. He was for many years Attorney of the State, and subsequently Judge of the Circuit Court.
He leaves his wife Harriet Elizabeth (Howell) Gray, native of Pennsylvania, whom he married 3 February 1834. Children:

3. Washington M., b. 1844–1862
4. James M., b. 1847
5. Harriet Florence, b. 1851–1919
6. Margaret Pope, b. 1852-1852
