By occupation, George was a tanner and operated a tannery and leather goods business in Pomeroy for many years.
In 1861, he took a temporary position as a telegraph operator, when the regular operator was appointed Captain of the Pomeroy Guards.
George served in several civic positions including a member of the city council and was elected mayor of Pomeroy in April 1862.

Death of Geo. McQuigg.--We take the following announcement of the death of Mr. George McQuigg from the Pomeroy Democrat, of the 3d inst. The deceased was as well known in this county, and particularly along the Ohio Bend, as he was at his home in Pomeroy. The Democrat says: "George McQuigg died last Saturday at Price's Mill, Cincinnati, from a complication of diseases brought on by an attack of the grip, at the age of 62. He was born at Rutland; was at one time Mayor of Pomeroy, and was for many years connected with the Ohio River Salt Company, and was President of the Pioneer Society at the time of his death. The remains arrived here Sunday, and the funeral services were held at his late residence at 2 p.m. Tuesday, by Rev. E.D. Daniels, of the Swedenborg church. He was then buried by the Free Masons at Beech Grove cemetery.
