Shirlene Marie Viale passed away in Eureka on February 12, 2011 at the age of 81. She was born May 20, 1929 at the old St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka to Shirley & Helen Callihan of Falk, CA (Humboldt County). Shirlene attended Eureka Schools graduating from Eureka High School in 1947. On March 4, 1948, Shirlene married the love of her life, John Nelson Viale and remained in Humboldt County where together, they raised their six sons.

Shirlene loved family picnics, gardening, to crochet, hunt for agates, and spending time at the property in Hayfork with her family.

Shirlene is survived by her six sons, Clifford, & wife Diane of Eureka; Jarl, and companion Kathy Grissom of Hayfork/ Anderson; Eddie, & wife Dallas, of Eureka; John, Jr. of Hayfork; Joe, of Fortuna and Jeffery of Eureka; Sister, Elve Cotton & Husband Robert of Eureka and Brother, Dale Callihan & wife Jacquie of Fortuna. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jason, David, Nichole, Joel, Brian, Stephanie, Anthony ("AJ"), Jennifer, Angela, John, Josepha, Jonathan, Jessica, Jolene, Susan, Jeffery. She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Shirley & Helen Callihan; husband, John Nelson Viale in August 2004; mother-in-law, Doris Wells, father-in-law, Clifford Viale; cousin, Dot Corvi and niece, Diane Viviani.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Beth Abels for her compassion and the wonderful care she gave our mother. Also to Eureka & Granada Healthcare these past 18 months when declining health prevented her from remaining in her home.

Graveside Services will be held this Saturday, February 19th, 11 am at Sunrise Cemetery, 3315 Newburg Road, Fortuna. Pallbearers will be Shirlene's sons and grandsons. Funeral arrangements are under the directions of Goble's Fortuna Mortuary.
