The third child and second daughter of Joseph Jean Riel and Eleonore Poitras, and niece of Louis Riel, Sara was born at Aux Petits Ormes, an old hunting settlement near St Pierre Jolys where a lot of Métis wintered. She was not born in St Vital like her siblings since the Riel family had to evacuate temporarily because of flooding of the Red River. Whether at home or boarding with relatives or friends, Sara went to various schools to about Grade 8, a significant achievement for that day. Most Manitoba teachers at that time had less education.

Sara Riel was 20 when she married Pierre Camille Teillet in St Boniface Cathedral on 21 June 1910. They lived on River Road in St Vital on two acres of land belonging to Sara. This property was across the road from what is now known as Riel House (Sara's childhood home), and now a national historic site. They were market gardeners. Sara gave birth to 11 children. She died in 1933, at the age of 43, from complications following ulcer surgery, and was buried in the St Boniface Cemetery. She was later moved to the new Teillet family plot in Green Acres Cemetery, where she rests next to her husband, Camille.
